Harvest Your Pumpkin

Everything you need to know about harvesting your Pumpkin

Now that Halloween is right around the corner, it is time to Harvest your Pumpkins! However, before you remove them from the ground, you need to make sure that they are ripe enough. If they are the fun can begin!

Indicators of a ripe Pumpkin

  1. Colour-

Not all pumpkins are orange in colour, however, for most the colour should be orange all the way around your pumpkin.

  1. Skin-

The skin of the pumpkin should be hard all over. If the skin is soft, it is not ripe enough. In addition to this, the skin often appears to be cracked near the stem of the fruit. There are factors which can cause your pumpkin to rot however, so it is important to take appropriate actions to ensure that your pumpkin remains healthy to produce the best outcome in October. For example, wet surfaces can harm your pumpkin, so if the soil is likely to become waterlogged, raise them off the ground on a wooden board.

  1. Sound-

If you tap on the Pumpkin, it should sound hollow.

How to remove the Pumpkin from the ground

When your Pumpkins are ripe and ready, simply cut the Pumpkin from the stem. Make sure that you leave several inches of the stem attached to the pumpkin. Store the pumpkin directly out of sunlight to ensure that your Pumpkin remains healthy for longer.

Using your Pumpkin

Please be careful when handling sharp objects. All children should be supervised by an adult.

The ways to use your Pumpkin is really down to personal preference. For most people, the most exciting way to use their Pumpkin in October is to celebrate Halloween! This involves removing the inside of the fruit and carving scary or funny shapes on the base. Once you have done this, you can place a small tealight inside the Pumpkin to make it glow at night time!

Alternatively, you can use the Pumpkin to cook with. Autumn is the perfect time to use your ripe Pumpkin fruit. It is a very popular fruit to make a soup with and is known for its bright orange colour.

You can use your empty Pumpkin as a container/ planter to place plants. It looks creative and will blend in with the natural landscape!

If you want to make your interior exceptionally unique, Halloween ready and creative, try using smaller pumpkins as table decorations. Whether you’ve carved them or left them in their natural state, they will look fantastic! Place them on your counter on the top of fallen Autumn leaves to bring the festivity indoors.
